US - PET FOOD TOXINS IDENTIFIED    Veterinary toxicologists at UC Davis have discovered the cause of the deaths of a number of dogs and cats who ate contaminated pet food earlier this year.
The pilot study found that a combination of melamine and cyanuric acid caused cats in their study to experience acute kidney failure.  The two chemicals were found in nearly 60 million packages of recalled pet food in March of 2007, but until recently had not been tested for potential toxicity. (AnimalNet - California Aggie) (Ed. Note: More to follow as more tests results become available.)

Centreville – It's been interesting to watch our pet's skin, feet and ears become irritated more than we usually see as the weather changes. With the dry summer and fall followed by the warmer than usual recent weather, the fleas, skin irritants from rough, dead grasses and allergens from many other sources are winning the health game with our pets in some cases.

Keep flea and tick protection on your pet year round but especially this year!

Watch closely if itching and skin irritations are occurring. Call us as soon as you witness any irritation to their skin so the pet's can enjoy the cooler weather before winter comes. Bathing the feet and skin even in cold weather is only a problem if we don't keep the pet dry and out of the elements until we know they are dry.

Get the grass cut and the leaves and debris cleaned up so fungi and mold won't be in their environment all winter.

Attempt to dry any wet soggy areas where bacteria and parasites can cause disease.

Vienna, Virginia – The Hope Center , formerly known as EVC or the Emergency Veterinary Clinic of Northern Virginia, is our partner for emergency care and is the location of excellent specialists in a

number of medical fields. They are moving about ¾ of a mile from their current location. Since 1977 they have been located in three buildings in Vienna. They are moving to their fourth due to space limitations to 140 Park Street, just a few feet off of Maple Avenue or Rt. 123. They are still open 24/7 365 days a year for all of us to rest easier as pets sometimes need their help when we are not available.

From the old location, just go north on Maple Avenue to Park Street a very short distance and turn right on Park Street and they are in the three story building on the left. There is great parking and the service should be quicker and they will provide a smooth transition to get your pet healthy in emergency situations.

This will also be the location of great cardiology specialists, surgical veterinarians, ophthalmologists, internal medicine specialists, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, and a great staff for keeping our pets happier in times of severe illnesses.

We welcome your comments and concerns because, in the end, we share a common goal: Happy and contented pets that are members of your family for a very long time.
